Will a coach help me stand out from my peers?

20/12/2022

Dear James,

I am a member of a group that are considered to be next senior management team of my company and I work hard to maintain my position in this group. I have noticed that some of my peers have been seeing an exec coach and although I myself did not feel the need to get a coach I am wondering why the others have. Any insights would be welcomed.

Regards

Answer:

Hi Michael,

You are working in a very competitive environment and it sounds like your peers are taking action to help them stay at the front of the pack. In addition to this, have you assumed that your peers arranged the exec coaching for themselves or is it the company that is investing in their development? In such a competitive space why do you not feel the need to invest in an exec coach for yourself? The days of a coach being thought of as only employed to solve a disruptive problem are long gone. Perhaps an open honest conversation with your boss on this topic would be helpful to you, show your commitment to the company and also clarify what your colleagues are doing or having done for them?
